The Waterton Park GC first ever Gin Festival was last weekend and was a huge success , to see me getting arrested, click on the event page for images of the evening, we have had thank you messages from just about everyone who was there and from people around the clubhouse how brilliant it was and how much they enjoyed the evening. The Gin companies were also delighted with how the event was run and enjoyed by all.  Thank you for supporting the event. JT hopes to include something similar for 2022 !

A number of Section matches are in the final stages with Juniors and Scratch Teams both vying for top spots and individual cup finals. Gordon Owen has a match at Howley Hall this Wednesday at 4.30 and would appreciate any support we can offer at the match.

August archived

Hello to all our Club Members, wow, what a scorching July we have had and that was just the weather, we had some pretty hot golf too from a number of our teams and members.

The scratch Team winning the L&D First Division Championship with Gordon Owen now through to the semi final of the Yorkshire Amateur Championship Trophy…. Good luck Gordy a tremendous effort culminating into what could be the Scratch Teams best year ever. Well done all a brilliant year for our team and for our Club. I will let everyone know Gordy’s process and semi final dates and venue, once announced.

Our Juniors are equally as impressive this year with a semi final match in the District Knockout at Howley Hall this coming Sunday and also racing up the league title race. Again an impressive year for our Juniors…… Who also showed how good they can play in the weekends final round of the Captains Trophy, they never lost a match and won hands down with having some 17 points more than the Seniors who came second despite the Seniors Captain and Seniors Vice Captain being soundly thrashed by very impressive Captains pair in the final round of the day.

Well done all and to our Club Vice Captain John Tordoff who organised the 2 events even if the scoring mechanism was a little untidy?

The first round of the Captains Trophy was on July the 25th followed by the Captains Drive In, but I must first mention an Eagle from my playing partner and last years Captain Andy Harrison on the 14th Hole a tremendous drive just a little shorter than mine…. Who hit his second shot way down the fairway and shouted “it's tracking” but it did go out of sight, after looking for his ball on the banking first at the back of the green only to find it at the bottom of the hole. Well done Andy the only hole we secured a win on against our Lady opponents?

We followed our round with the Captains Drive In, a much re arranged event due to covid restrictions. Entertained by the ” Twirling Trio” a little Majorette trio arranged, performed, and directed by my granddaughter Brooke McHale and what a daring thing to do with about 120 people watching. A very well done goes to all 3 who also joined us for dinner and speeches. Very proud of you and your team.

Hello all, well we finally have the weather we have all been hoping for, enjoy your time on the golf course with a little warm sun or your back.

Last weekend we had our first Captains mixed away weekend at the wonderful Carus Green Golf complex, with a two night stay. Our first port of call was Kendal GC........ out of the party of 22 I don’t think any one of us will be rushing back there, to say it was mountainous would not do it justice. I am sure though many would love to go back to Carus Green.

We have a number of up and coming events in what is now a very busy period of golf with all sections having away and home matches, please make sure you check out all the notice boards for events.

We have the Captains Drive Off on July the 4th and posters are around the club house. Tickets are with all section Captains and some behind the bar. Tickets are required if you are to join us for the American Style buffet in the restaurant. Anyone wishing just to come down and watch the drive off is welcome to join us,  a free drink is offered in the bar.

Could I take this opportunity to all past Captains to attend if possible, tradition will be honoured and will be introduced into the room. I extend this invitation to our past Lady Captains too.

I also hope to have a photo shoot of the groups.

The Celebrity day on the 16th of June is now at 11 teams, this is a tremendous effort by our members who have taken teams. The running order and your team Celebrity will be announced closer to the date.

We do however have space for the following people to be involved on the day, ball watchers, team guides, walking round with groups who will have not played at Waterton before, and we have a position of a meet and greet person in the carpark advising celebrities and guests where to park and where to go.

Please remember the Gin Festival tickets are now live on here on the events page.

Sunday the 13th we have 2 events at the club with the Perkin Cup Mixed Greensomes starting at 12.00 notices around the clubhouse or contact myself or Karen.

Later in the afternoon is our Gents Annodata knockout comp against Willow Valley with 5 of our members taking part.

Don’t forget the big one later in the month “The Club Championship” 26th/27th of June who will be announced “The Championship Golfer Of The Year” please come down and support the teams coming up the 18th or take a walk around the course with your favourite.

We have now put the costings to our mixed weekend (anyone welcome) at Linden Hall on the 19/20 of September, £130 gets you 2 rounds of golf, Spa facilities, dinner B/B. Please see Karen or myself to place your name on the list, it is selling out fast.

Well a newsletter should be short and punchy so will leave it at that.

Check out the Section Captains updates for all you own section news/matches and awaydays.

Thursday 3th : A Team Home Scarthingwell

Wednesday 9th : A team Home Sandmoor

It has been more of a challenge for the White Rose team with two closely fought losses, 2 to 3 at home to Darrington and Garfoth and an unfortunate 0 to 5 result at Garforth away. Their next matches are:

Thursday 24th :  White Rose Away Darrington

Wednesday 30th : White Rose Away Brustwick

Congratulations to Anne Bridges on winning the May Medal

WEG Trust Stapleford Competition This event was won by Karen Andrews with a score of 35 points in the below 20 handicap division. There were no entries in the higher handicap division

YVLGA Jane Wood, Fiona Storrier and Michelle Harrison took part in the April Championships. Creditable performances in the individual competition were accompanied by a superb 5th place in the Tri-Am competition

AnnoData  Karen Andrews, Anita Lawson, Jane Murray, Diane Westmorland and Fiona Storrier beat Crosland Heath 3&2 and are awaiting the next draw. Well done ladies!

BREADSALL PRIORY 8/9th August – Ladies Weekend Away There are only four places left for this event, so if your holiday plans have changed drop me an email if you would like to join us. A deposit of £35.00 is required.

Tigers have played 2 away matches and are presently 7th position out 10. We have our first home match on June the 1st and will be looking for good points. There are a few spaces left for Worksop at 1.00 on Friday the 4th . Finally don’t forget if you join the Tigers section you’ll be in the extra medal competitions for June and September (Saturday or Sunday), with the chance of taking the money. There will be a Nett and Gross winner. Happy golfing, JT

Last Wednesday (26th May) saw the conclusion of the Bill Parkin Trophy after 8 rounds. The event was lead from the start by David Hinchliff only to see him caught and passed by Paul Harris in the penultimate round. However David pulled it back in the final round to win from Paul. Well done David and thanks to everyone who took part.

The above was followed by the Senior’s Section AGM which was held in the Park Restaurant, which saw 34 members enjoy Pie, Chips and Vegetables and a short meeting reviewing last year and this year’s up and coming events.

The Mike O’Donnell Summer Cup starts on the 9th June and will be held over 12 stroke play rounds.  The event is free to enter for Senior’s members but there will be the opportunity to enter the supplementary weekly prize event at a one off cost of £15. There will also be balls for 2’s.

We have a friendly match at home to Oulton Hall on Thursday 10th June with a first tee time of 9:30. I will be taking the notice down next week and issuing the teams by next Friday (4th June) so if you want to be considered for the team get your name down now.

On the 29th June we have our first Away Day to the Oaks Golf Club at York. The event seems extremely popular with over 30 members indicating they wish to play. I’ve spoken to the Oaks and they have increased the number of times to accommodate 40 players so still time to get your name down for this popular venue. I will take the notice down in about 2 weeks and then give details on how to pay. The Away Days to Brough, in July, and Malton and Norton, in August, also look to be well supported at this stage.

Bernard has been promoting the sale of tickets for the Captain’s Drive In on Sunday 4th July. Whilst these have been selling fast I still have 10 tickets available at a cost of £12.50. Either ask about them when you see me or send an email to reserve one, or two.

The Ladies Open Day is coming up on Wednesday 7th July so I’ll be putting up a notice shortly requesting help from the Senior’s Section for Meeters and Greeters, Starters and Ball Spotters. Please look out for it.

Welcome to our 4th Newsletter, the season is now well on the way with competitions starting and knockouts being competed in various formats. I would like to make a special mention re the Casson Cup that takes place on the Sunday 16th of May this is a mixed foursomes (alternate shots) match play event. Although often played in couples, all are welcome to take part and if you need a partner (or wish to change the one you have!) please let either Karen or myself know and we will try and sort something out. Sign up lists on ladies and general notice boards.

You may have seen a number of messages seeking volunteers to assist at the Academy course this Thursday from 8.30am onwards, this is work to bring back the course to playing condition for our Junior section and is an important section for the growth of the club. As many people as possible for an hour or two please, to tidy up the area, tee boxes, bunkers and greens.

Whilst I continue a cry for help and assistance, our Rabbits section are searching for more members, Rabbits Captain Nigel has put together an updated message with a heart felt plea to increase his numbers this year. So if you are a 15 handicapper or over, who enjoys a fun round and a few drinks after, then please contact Nigel.

We have a new Wakefield Hospice Banner this year, this will be moved around to various parts of the club to be in prime spot for different ventures, such as the first tee box for the drive off or car park for the Gin Festival. I saw it yesterday in the hallway of the club and it looks great.

I mentioned the Drive off, on the 4th of July Sunday evening 5.00pm start. Tickets will be on sale form all section captains, from the bar, myself and Karen, notices are now up around the club and tickets will be available from next Monday onwards. Even if you cannot make it for the meal after, please come down and have a free drink with the Captain and your section Captains. Watch your section Captain see how far he can drive off with an old hickory driver, as all other previous Captains have done and is part of our history.

I was at the club yesterday (Sunday) and noticed how close the bar area is to completion and how great it's looking, roll on when we can all sit inside and not be shivering outside, this weather is giving “having a cold one” a whole different meaning.

The Lady Captain, myself and all section Captains will be having our photo shoot on Monday the 10th so the 2021/22 team will soon be up above the bar.

We have our first Captains mixed away trip this month. Karen and I are really looking forward to making this a memorable trip for all those who signed up for the Lake District. Apologies to those who may have wished to come along but the numbers were set by the Golf Club as we will still be iwithn lockdown constraints on numbers. However, please keep an eye out, watch the notice boards and my website for our trip in September to Lindon Hall, we should have no covid constraints for this one so we will open up the bookings early to maximise this trip, please if you are not one that usually makes these trips it's open to none couples and anyone who wishes to join us. It should be a great weekend. The Date is 19/20 of September please send me or Karen your initial enquiry. We have 6 already booked so be quick.

Amanda and I ...... well I say I, mostly Amanda has been working hard on the Celeb Day and Gin Festival along with Sir Dave Richards, updates are regularly being posted on the website, we recently confirmed a gin company called “Waterton’s Reserve Gin” and the owner is very much aware of the history of our area and Sir Charles Waterton, so this one should be interesting. The tickets for this event should be live (Electronic) from 1st of June. More information will be made available closer to the event, but check out the events page for updates.

We still have a few spaces left for the Celebrity Day. We have sold 10 teams but added 2 extra tee times in case, we have been offered to have these taken up by Corporate clients from the NSPCC contacts but have declined this to ensure Waterton Members have the first choice and help make some much needed funds for our chosen charities. If any of our members are interested but do not have a team, please contact me and I'm are sure we can fit you in somewhere.

Please look out for our Scratch Team fixtures and support our team where ever possible. Our Scratch Captain Gordon will keep us updated in his monthly reports in the newsletters.

The first match is away at Wakefield (Woodthorpe) on the 17th of May and then away to Wike Ridge on the 24th of May.

Our Juniors section have their first match this coming Sunday 1pm at home against Moortown.

Well that’s about all from me this month, look forward to seeing you all on the course and around the club house.

Bernard J McHale

Dear Members, welcome to our third Newsletter, at last we can start thinking about playing golf.

Firstly may I thank all the ground staff for the huge effort being made to getting the course into a playing standard despite the weather conditions since January, the course is approximately 5 weeks behind in growing terms, so still has a winter coat. But.. we will be playing from Monday onwards.

A big thank you also to all the volunteers who have given up their time to assist around the course.

This coming Monday I will be  meeting and greeting most of you on the first tee or at the halfway house, for those who don’t know me please come over a say hello, it’s my way of getting to know all our members. Please also join me in a little tipple at the halfway house, on me, as a “welcome back”.

I also need to apologise to anyone who was hoping to go on the Carus Green trip, this was fully booked within 48 hours of it going live. The numbers were reduced to comply with the Covid Instruction at the time of the event and the number of guests allowed in each lodge.

I can announce that the Captains Drive In, that was cancelled in March will now go ahead on July the 4th American Independence day, more information to follow closer to the date, but a little hint in the title “American” so think majorettes, baton twirling, ribs, wings and fries. Plus a few embarrassing golf swings.

For anyone that may not have yet searched through my web pages yet, please do, this web page is updated as soon as we have information to add, the Celebrity golf day and Gin Festival pages are being updated daily with new names and companies being added. Our latest celeb to commit is Snooker Legend John Parrott MBE. We now have secured sponsorship from tonic company Fever-Tree for the Gin Festival with 6 gin companies already signed up and more to join us. Please check out the web site for the ticket details to be released in May as these will sell out very quickly.

Hopefully, you are all well and excited to get back to playing golf and you all received my March Update email. If not please contact me on 07761 471452 or

Now that the locker room is accessible, there are lots of fun things to sign up for! More details will be on the notice board.

Matt Pearson  Head Professional  Waterton Park GC

I’m really looking forward to the return of golf it’s been a tough 3 months for us all but some levels of normality will soon be with us.

It’s going to be a busy year for myself and the golf club but let’s all just be grateful that golf is actually returning.

When the shop reopens on April 12th we will be stocked with brands like Footjoy, Under Armour, Glenbrae, Srixon, Titleist, Motocaddy so please call in and check out our new products.

Here’s to a better year on and off the golf course and I look forward to greeting you all in the upcoming weeks but please don’t mention anything about football as I’m still a bit emotional about this subject.

The Seniors Section is open to members who are 55 or older in 2021. If you are interested in joining the section the please contact me, my name is David Hughes ( and I am 2021 Seniors Captain. The annual cost of membership is a modest £5 or free if you’re over 80. If you didn’t receive my recent email about the Seniors Section activities for 2021 it’s likely we no longer have your contact details so you need to let me know these if you wish to be a member.

Gary Holford is this year’s Vice Captain and 2022 Seniors Captain. He is affectionately known as ‘Caravan Club’ by his section colleagues, I think it’s something to do with not getting behind him on the golf course or the road to the East Coast.

The section will commence the season with a rather belated start to the Bill Parkin Winter Trophy on Wednesday 7th April and will run for 8 consecutive weeks with the final round on May 26th. It is best 5 from 8 round stableford scores, is free to enter and there will be prizes for the overall top 3 + balls for any 2’s.

I’ve arranged 3 Away Days, as follows: The Oaks Gold Club, York, Tuesday 29th June.  Brough Golf Club, Tuesday 20th July. Malton & Norton Golf Club, Monday 23rd August.

Whilst these events are primarily for the Seniors Section any member is welcome to join us on the Away Days. The cost will be around the £50 mark for 18 holes of golf, coffee / bacon sandwich on arrival and a meal to follow. Look out for further details on the Seniors Notice Board over the coming weeks.

Friendly matches, home and away, have been arranged with Silkstone and Oulton Hall Golf Clubs; see Seniors Notice Board for further detail nearer the date of the fixtures.

Hi all, not long now.
Sadly, due to the continuing effects of the Covid we will have 4 friendly matches to begin with then get into the competitive games !

We are looking for a sponsor for the section and it would be great to give those playing for the section a new ball with a logo each match. Something different and a great way of getting your company or activity known. Please get in touch with Ryan or myself ASAP to support us.

We’ve been asked what the £10 joining fee gets you , fair question.  Each member gets entry to the knockout,  also an opportunity to play at other clubs in the Heavy Woollen matches and this year there will be two competitions running along side of the Monthly Medal in June and September. One will be a Net and one a Gross event.    The winner will receive a share of the monies collected.  We also support the Captains Charity .   So please join the section in 2021 , speak to Ryan Nock or myself in person or by the usual contacts below.

Best wishes, stay safe etc.   John T

Hello all  The rabbits section has no real update at the present time.
I will be putting up all our match details and joining forms on our notice board next week. If members want to join the Rabbitts section. Most things are still up in the air.  I do email my section regularly to keep them informed

Cheers  Nigel

Good morning, the juniors haven’t really got an update other than we’re looking at courses to go and have away days to improve the confidence on playing courses away from home for junior matches. Due to the booking at the moment this has affected the juniors on sundays as we have had 3/4 slots for juniors around 12.00, this means we won’t be able to play around this time for a few month therefore we are unable to proceed with any little competitions or things like that. However we have now received the dates for the junior matches and we’re are all looking forward for the season to get underway.

Cheers  Lewis

MARCH NEWsletter

CAPTAINS NEWS  March will soon be here and at last we can see an end to our incarceration as we get closer to opening things up again, but slowly.

Our first Planned event of the post lock down  Is the Carus Green away trip 23-25th May.  Full details now available  in the events section, please click the menu bar above to check out the details and venue.

I would like to thank everyone who got involved with the charity calendar, with sales and sponsorship we have started the years fundraising with a healthy balance.   There may be one or two left in the office if any one would like to buy one.

We now have received our Team Jumpers, these will be worn by Captains and Vice Captains at any official function, team event, but especially for our team photos along the clubhouse bar, as is the tradition.   I am keen to promote tradition throughout the club and keep our history alive for those who come along after us. The jumpers I feel are part of that but in a little different colour.

As you can see from the catalogue model showing off "The Tiger Sunday" look, unfortunately as I write this the news is not great regarding his accident but we wish him well.

The Captains blazer is part of our history and I am proud to be a part of the history now, some 25 Captains have been before me enhancing the role as we go on. Unfortunately my blazer is still in lockdown at the outfitters.

An apology from the last news letter.   I can now confirm that the membership start date will be the 1st of March, not the 31st as stated.

RABBITS SECTION NEWS Hi the rabbits have their first match Thursday 13th May at Wakefield away !!!  Our Slaley Hall 13-14th June looks like it could be a go. Full at the moment 28 going.

I will be putting membership forms on the Rabbits notice board ASAP for this year’s membership £5.   I've had several enquiries about joining the rabbits. All are welcome with handicap if 15 and above. Just fun golf with likeminded golfers and ideal to meet new golfers and play local courses

Fun is the main aim.  Contact me or enquire in the shop or office 🐇🐇🐇 ND

TIGERS SECTION NEWS   Good afternoon all , the Tigers wrapped up their 2020 with a virtual agm via an email exchange . Ryan Nock will be the section vice captain and our first match in the Heavy Woollen League is scheduled for April 20th away at Hanging Heaton. Membership remains at £10 and all Golfers with a playing handicap of 15 and under are welcome to join us.  🏌️‍♀️  JT

SCRATCH SECTION NEWS Welcome to 2021 scratch league season. Having been successful over the past 3 seasons in the top division finishing joint top twice in league & winning the scratch knockout will be hard to follow but with the support we received from our members was fantastic. We play at 5pm on Monday nights & the golf played by plus handicap golfers is good to watch. first match is away at our local rivals WAKEFIELD on 17th May, followed by WIKE RIDGE away 24th May. Hope all our sections have a successful season golf. Stay safe, GORDON.

LADIES SECTION NEWS  I have put together an in depth report from our last meeting which can be found in the Ladies section page on this site. Hoping to restart the roll up and other events very soon too.  Any updates and information will be posted here or forwarded to you as soon as possible.  Best wishes Karen

JUNIORS SECTION NEWS   Our first game is on the 11th of May against Moortown, hopefully by then we will have a few more juniors joining us In the summer.  For the juniors I'd like to have an away day one Sunday where we would play a chosen course close to our region for the juniors to play and prepare them mentally for different courses, they can then take the experience into their away games in a junior league hopefully easing the pressure.  (if any one could help out with arranging this, please get in touch with Lewis Taylor or Kevin O'Neil)

No updates were received from the Nett Captain so updates can be added at a later date.

Our Seniors Captain has informed me he wishes to send a more detailed communication direct to the Seniors section at a later date.

A message from Wakefield Hospice..

The pandemic has brought many challenges for all of us, but thanks to our community we are constantly inspired by the dedication of our supporters, like yourselves the members of Waterton Golf Club, who continue to contribute and make a significant difference to our patients and their families so that we can continue to care 24/7.

2020 would have been our 30th anniversary, we had numerous events planned to celebrate this milestone.  It was an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and the journey we have travelled over the last three decades, sadly it wasn’t to be.

The impact on the hospice has been enormous, we have faced a number of clinical challenges and obstacles to raise funds, with all events cancelled and our shops closed for most of the year.

Our no 1 priority remains, caring and protecting our patients, families and carers at such a vulnerable time in their lives.

2021/22 will be one of our greatest challenges since we opened and that is to ensure we have sufficient funds to survive.

We hope that our shops will be allowed to open in March/April, we are fortunate that our eBay operation goes from strength to strength. We have a number of physical events planned for this year… but we envisage that most of our indoor events will not happen until 2022.

  • Make a Will Week – March & September

  • Firewalk – 20th March

  • 10K ADIM – 1st – 31st May

Once again thank you to Mr Captain and the members of Waterton Golf club for supporting Wakefield Hospice, your fundraising efforts are always much appreciated by everyone associated to your local hospice.
